Newly installed decks need to be cleaned and sealed just like older decks with a few exceptions. New decks should not be sealed for at least 3-6 months after installation to allow the wood to cure and be exposed to the weathers elements. They may not look like it needs cleaning but they do. When new lumber is delivered from the factory it comes with whats called a “mill glaze” on the surface to keep the wood protected. This “mill glaze” needs to be cleaned off prior to sealing it or the surface may not absorb the stain properly or efficiently and cause peeling or wear over a very short period of time. Not to mention provide little protection. We use a bio-degradable solution and very low pressure (little more than a garden hose) to clean the surface and remove the mill glaze prior to sealing it.
